Best practice designing infra / greenfield.

L.s.

Studying 70-410, unable to find an answer(s) on the following.

Example infra:

Site A
My workstation

Site B
Server01 -> [ Hyper-V core, hosting VM's -> AD, FS ]
Server02 -> [ Hyper-V core, hosting VM's -> AD, other ]

What would be the correct way of managing the domain hosted on this dual hypervisor?
And the best way of managing the hypervisors?

A. - Do i need to add a 3th server ( not a VM ) that acts as a bastion server with server manager & hyper-v mangement?

This server would obtain all the servers in server manager & also the hyper-v servers? I would setup a VPN from Site A and connect via RPD on this bastion machine?

B. - Adding a VM on one of the Hypervisors and manage all from that?

VPN to Site B and RDP the VM on the Hypervisor?

C. - Directly via Site A ( with VPN or HTTPS pssession )?

Not really confident with the whole cert/winrm public/ opening ports etc ( security issues )

And how am i going to monitor the whole domain and services plus the hypervisors?
Do you place the hypervisors in the same subnet/ip range and just add them to the bastion/management server/client?

I hope you understand my question, maybe i'm overthinking it and have to stay with the KISS method.
Maybe you could provide me with  a link with standard domain build & management setups?

With kind regards,

Mark

I installed a new 2012r2 server onto my domain.  There is one other 2008 server which I am going to retire when I have everything on my new server working. both server have domain controllers and both are running dns. old as primary.  I created a share on the new server and was trying to map a drive to it.  When I tried to browse to it i couldn't see it.  the old server came up but not the new.  I tried using the unc //servername/share name and the drive mapped and I could see the files.  Anyone know why it won't show in browse

Access Denied - Base Filter Engine

Dear Experts,

I have setup a Win 2k8 server standard edition SP2 and it was running without any problems. Suddenly I saw a bluescreen (I suppose this is because of a new Bluetooth driver I added). Now I cant get the network working so as the windows firewall. I suppose the problem is because of "Base Filtering Engine" saying "Access Denied". What can be the reason?

I copied the BFE registry settings from a server working well and tried importing, but no success yet.

Event ID 4769 w/ Failure Code 0x1b

I have been beating my head against a wall trying to trace this issue and I hope someone here can help out.  First of all let me describe the environment in question:

Forest 1 - Single domain Forest Functional Level 2008

Forest 2 - 4 domains, Parent and 3 child domains Forest Functional Level 2008 R2

There is NO trust in either direction between these forests

Users are using Windows 7 workstations

Situation is that users in Forest 1 are connecting to resources in Forest 2-Child2 using applications launced with RunAs, specifiying credentials that are valid in Forest2/Child2 domain.  This all works...   The issue however is that on the domain controllers in Forest 1 (especially the DC with all the FSMO roles) we logs thousands of Audit Failure events with event ID 4769 and a Failure Code 0x1b.  A lot of this cross forest connectivty is done using tools like SQL Server Management Studio or Toad.  Again, the connectivity works and the user(s) are able to access data as needed its just our NOC is starting to beat us up over these "failed logins"...

Now in my readings I have discovered this error translates to:

0x1B       KDC_ERR_MUST_USE_USER2USER           Server principal valid for user-to-user only.

Further research has lead me down the deep dark rabbit hole of SPN's.  I am not certain this is really a missing SPN or incorrectly registered SPN.  One one of the SQL servers in Forest 2 / Domain 2 I see events such as:

So what I am wondering is if this really is a SPN issue, or if the issue is simply that access is being requested between two forests that do not have a trust?  If I have not provided enough details please let me know.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Plans to extend DH key size on NPS (EAP) to support modern dot1x clients?

Many operating systems (specifically iOS, OS X and Chrome OS) are beginning to phase out weak DH keys. When can we expect a patch to be released to upgrade the DH key size used by NPS with EAP to be at least 2048 bits? This is forcing me to deploy FreeRADIUS as a temporary fix until NPS gets fixed.

Shared Folder

good day all

i currently work at a call center as part of the I.T department. we haveone mikrotik switch with is remotely controlled by our ISP. we also have about 7 PoE switches. we configured one PC as our file server which supplies files to our support and quality departments. some of the computer have access to this computer and its shared folders, but some don't. i have check all the file sharing settings on all PC and they are correct, but 2 of our computers still don't have access to these folder. i turned off the firewall and antivirus with no success on the access.

how do i solve this issue? and if the computers are connected to different switches, will this affect the shared folder?

Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 - Lsass.exe High CPU - Process Monitor shows Buffer Overflow

Hi All,

Just looking for some troubleshooting advice....

We have a server running as a File server and a Domain Controller that is pretty much unresponsive. Task manager shows lsass.exe consuming high amounts of resources. Using Process Monitor shows lsass.exe doing the following:

A virus scan came up clean. Can anyone shed any light on whats happening? It looks suspicious to me, though could quite easily be an error with an application or an underlying issue with the O/S? Has anyone seen anything similar to this before?

Cheers

How should permissions be assigned if different than the parent dir/folder?

windows 2008R2 server

we have a shared$\  folder where everyone has full permissions.

I created a subfolder under the shared$\callednewfolder  which I need to assigned different permissions than the shared$\ folder.

the new folder will be assigned to 5 people with full permissions and invisible to an "all grp" that now have full permission in the shared$\.  SoI  added the five people to the shared$\ parent;  removed inherit permissions and assigned the following:

Traverse folder /execute file;  list folder / read data;  read attirbutes;  read extended attributes to the shared$\

In the shared$\new folder I assigned the 5 people full permissions.

  Next,

in the shared$\new folder I removed inherit permissions from parent for "all grp" and assigned permissions in the shared$\new folder for the "all grp" to the following:

Traverse folder /execute file;  list folder / read data;  read attirbutes;  read extended attributes

*should this work?  I tried to map \shared$\new folder on a user's computer that has full permissions and it doesn't work...

any clue what I should do?

 -Appreciate a response.

I have computer with OS 2012 R2 that has a TPM chip. Computer is part of a domain and has several drives C: (OS drive) and Z: (Data Drive). Can I achieve the following?

I would like encrypt data drive (Z:) without encrypting OS drive (C:). I would like to take ownership of TPM and store the TPM password and Bitlocker recovery key in Active directory. What commands or procedure do I follow to achieve this?

Thank you in advance.

Trying to expand usable RAM, but msconfig - boot is empty

Hi,

I have Windows Server 2012 Datacenter with 80 GB RAM, but only 8 is usable. I would like the full 80 to be usable.

Therefore, I tried to edit this via MSCONFIG - advanced boot options. However, my MSCONFIG shows in the 'Boot' tab no boot boot configurations. All the buttons are therefore not clickable.

Is there another method of getting usable RAM up? Or how could I solve the lack of boot options shown in MSCONFIG (to be clear: the server is booting without problem whatsoever).

Server usb mouse unresponsive at the console

Windows 2008 R2 server has an unresponsive USB Mouse.  The server is a HP Proliant ML310e Gen8 server.  I'm not sure when it stopped working because clients seldom uses the console.  I can remote in and have no problems with it.

No other usb devices has any issues and the mouse will work in other PCs.  When I connect the mouse the OS recognizes it and says it's ready for operations.  The mouse has power but it will not move or the right & left buttons will not work.

I've tried the following fixes.
* updated USB Bus Drivers
* No issues with device manager
* updated generic mouse driver
* Moved mouse to multiple ports both front and back
* I checked system resources and CPU & Memory usage is low. There are no unusually amounts of interrupts either.
* I don't see any apparent issues in error logs

Any help MUCH appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Mike

Windows Server disconnects from Windows 10 workstations

$

I have a perplexing problem with our Windows 2008R2 server acting as a file server (not a DC...just a member server).  It contains our data files on it.

Here's the problem.  Frequently, our Windows 10 domain workstations lose their connection to this server.  Our DHCP server is supported on our Cisco RV110W router.   When the workstations lose connection to the server, I notice that a ping of the server comes up with a 98.x.x.x address for the server.  BUT, the actual server has a static IP and that address is 10.10.100.x .   So, why is it that our workstations initially connect and when they ping the server the first time show the proper 10.10.100.x address but for some unknown reason (even as users are working on the computer and connected to the server) suddenly lose connection and when that happens the address it pings to is 98.x.x.x

How does that happen?  How is it that a workstation can start off negotiating a server with the correct IP address then suddenly the connection is lost and the IP address becomes 98.x.x.x?  This almost always happens when the user temporarily leaves his/her workstation for about 10-15minutes and when he/she returns and tries to continue working, the server is disconnected.  This happens even if I set the workstations to static addressing including statically assigning the DNS servers.  However, normally the workstations are set to Dynamic Addressing and that is the way we prefer.  But, as I said the problem occurs regardless of Static or Dynamic assignment of IP addresses.

This isn't ALL THE TIME but occurs about every 1-2 weeks apart.

very strange.

Thanks in advance

WDS generic Autounattend.xml file

$

Right now running a WDS server, I'm trying to set up 2 different images. One for a X1 Carbon, another for a Dell Vostro 230. From trial and error, I've discovered that I've needed an identical Autounattend file for the WdsClientUnattend folder, as the ImageUnattend file in the \RemoteInstall\Images\Lenovo\Win7Pro\Unattend location. In the image folder for the manufacturer, a custom unattend file makes sense. But, for the WdsClientUnattend file, that location is shared between manufacturers, but I cannot remove the manufacturer specific components of the Unattend file or else the image won't deploy. Can someone help me make a generic Autounattend that both manufacturers can share? Here's what I have for this file:

Hi, I have a SMTP virtual server and send e-mails using it.

How can I check logs for e-mails sent successfully? I need a kind of "message tracking" that says to me that the e-mail was sent succesfully.

Environment: Windows Server 2012 R2. Using the SMTP Virtual server as a relay to office 365

Hi guys, I am trying to Map a Drive to some users account in my Netowrk. I want the drive to host a kind of Dropbox type folder where students can drop work into the folder but can't access the folder to make changes or see what's in it only a teacher can. I know how to do it with the Mac OD & I know it can be done on the AD network but can't seem to get it working. Anyone ever tried this?
