Issues installing SP1 on 2008 R2, logs inside post

Hello,

I'm having issues installing SP1. It installs and reboots, but then rolls back.  Below are the logs.  Looks like something related to tsprint.inf  I tried to find the tsprint.inf_amd64_neutral_c48d421ad2c1e3e3 folder after the role back completed, but I couldn't find it. I found a similair tsprint.inf_amd64_neutral folder, but hex numbers where different then c48d421ad2c1e3e3 not sure if this is the issue since the error states access denied instead of not found, etc

Disable third party automatic updaters (Java, Adobe) via a GPO

$

I need to disable the automatic updates on 100 computers via a GPO. I have searched and searched but not found a real solution. I found this:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408711.html

But that pertains to the older versions, and as you know we are on 9.3.3 now for adobe reader.

I need to disable the automatic updates for Adobe flash player, Adobe reader, Acrobat, and Java, and any other adobe or java products there may be. For one reason, java tends to break things and I like to test it out before pushing the update to everyone. With automatic, people click them and end up with problems. Also, the updates often do not work like the latest version of adobe I have had a bunch of complaints that they would click update and it would not install, they get errors.

Anyways, there has to be a way to disable these through a gpo. Anyone?

task scheduler - fails with PCSKBD110 - The system keyboard (type=0, subtype=0) is not supported

I am running Windows 2008 - r2 and have set up the task scheduler to run my IBM personal communications. If I am logged in with my admin account, I can right click and run a task successfully or schedule a task and while still logged in, watch the scheduler kick it off successfully. My IBM personal communications settings have a keyboard file (img_jump.kmp) which when the session opens I can click the keyboard and it will open successfully. But, if I schedule the task then loggoff the box, task scheduler will launch the cmd file, but it will fail with a: PCSKBD110 - The system keyboard (type=0, subtype=0) is not supported. This same kmp file works just fine in Windows 2003. I have no idea why Windows 2008 R2 does not support this file - is there another one that I can download that works in Windows 2008?

Greetings,

The microsoft doco on dotnet 4.5 doesnt make this clear.

If I am installing a brand new server, do I need to install dotnet v4.0, then dotnet V4.5 or does installing dotnet v4.5 fully include all of dotnet v4.0?

Thanks

2008 DC Status Unavailable when changing directory server

$

Hello, while testing/playing with Server 2008, in my two separate test domains. One, a 4 DC native 2008 domain and two, a mixed 2003 R2 / 2008 domain. I noticed whenever I right click on my domain, from one of the roles, and choose change domain controller, and the change Directory Server menu comes up. It also shows my W2K8 DC's status as being Unavailable. My W2K3 DC's all show Online. Why is that? It does not prevent me from managing them or performing any function that i know of. I have the firewall's off thinking it was some kind of SNMP traffic but that didn't change anything.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Troubleshooting nearly dead W2K8 server

$

Hi, I'm new here and a very novice server admin. (Calling myself an admin is a loose use of the word!)

I have a W2K8 server acting as a file server and AD controller.

It began locking up on me and I thought it was heat related on the CPU so I pulled the case open and put a large fan blowing directly into the case.

That seemed to stop the lockups but the server seemed really slow.

A few days later the server began locking up again.

If I reboot the server (I have to power fail it once it is locked up) it will run for a little while (maybe 30 min) before locking up. However, I just figured out that even though it appears locked up, the TCP/IP stack is still working because it will respond to pings. That has the side effect of making PCs that are members of the domain to take a VERY long time to log in because the server is there from an IP perspective but the DC service is not there so the authentication has to time out.

Any ideas what might be going wrong? I really need to revive the server long enough to pull the files from it and then I'm going to get rid of having a DC (I really don't need it) and just set up a box to share the drive space. (I might re-use the hardware if that is not the cause of the problem.)

I have no idea if I'm looking at a hardware or software problem at this point.

TIA for all help/advice/suggestions!

Access Denied

Please help,

We have a website that resides on a cluster of 3 servers.
On this website we are attempting to access files located in a shared folder (clustered).

When IIS attempts to connect to the share, it always passes the ANONYMOUS credentials even though were specifically passed a service account to the share from IIS.

Consequently the share rejects that request.

How can we have IIS pass the proper credentials to the share to gain access?

Note:  We already tried passing credentials via a virtual directory in IIS.  It seems to ignore that.

I am using source initiated event forwarding and I was wondering if someone could point me to an example\tutorial of how to forward events to a custom log on my collector computer.

For example I want to create a custom log named DCLogs and forward events there for a subscription.

I googled around, but did not find any useful howtos on this- is this even possible?

Hi,

I have just installed Windows Server 2008 and notice that after a period of inactivity the screen lock activates and I have to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and enter the password to unlock it.  Is there any way to either extend the timeout or disable the timeout all together?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Window Server 2008 Problem with Saving Local Gateway Address

$

Hi all,

I am tired myself of hearing about this problem.  I have read a lot of junk out there relative to resolving the local gateway problem inherent to Windows Server 2008.  The problem is just not going away so get used to it.  I'm setting up my own server and am very frustrated to the point of calling Microsoft for paid support.   That however, will be my last resort as I don't wish to fall prey to such a design flaw as this.

Microsoft has published Article No. 2555789, resolution to known issue with Local Gateway Address not saving.  My findings besides being poorly written, it doesn't even work.  Why didn't they just copy the same procedure from Windows Server 2003?   If that doesn't further complicate the matter people have submitted their own home grown resolutions in no less then 2 pages with screen shots included.

In conclusion, everyone is waiting to read the correct resolution to this problem.   In advance, thank you so much!

I have a Win2k3 DC that has one of my DNS servers on it.  I have removed all of the FSMO roles and confirmed they are removed.  The user is a part of the Enterprise Admin group.   When i try to remove the DC through dcpromo I get the following error in the dcpromo.log.  I would like to keep from using /forceremoval but is this a sign of something wrong in my AD or just on the DC i am trying to remove.
