DNS Server is crashing periodically

Hello.

We have 3 servers with AD and integrated DNS Server, 2 Windows Server 2012 and 1 Server 2008.

The DNS Server on this 3 servers is crashing in random times and we need to manual start the service (services.msc).

It started when we migrated two servers from 2008 to 2012...

Any tip to fix it? Bellow the log that we get when the problem happens:

Faulting application name: dns.exe, version: 6.3.9600.19292, time stamp: 0x5c5dd0f4 Faulting module name: dns.exe, version: 6.3.9600.19292, time stamp: 0x5c5dd0f4 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00000000000a5633 Faulting process id: 0xe48 Faulting application start time: 0x01d5632d8e8337bf Faulting application path: C:\Windows\system32\dns.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\dns.exe Report Id: 644ff44a-d0b0-11e9-80d7-005056981fc7 Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID:

The DNS Server service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 120000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

RODC clients show domain users as a SID

Hello

There are two spearate AD sites. 2 RODCs in one site and 2 RWDCs in another.

My questions:

1- When we add domain users as a local admin (from lusrmgr.msc) on RODC site's clients they are shown as SID until we add that client in PRP allowed group. then it resolves. why could be that? authenticating is without any trouble.

2- When we add clients or servers to allowed PRP group, is there any reason to add users too?

Thanks in advance

Hello All,

I have a site where i have 150 users , when user login it's not pointing to Local domain controller instead pointing to some other domain controller in Azure.

Please let me know what needs to checked.

checks Performed :

1. DNS record exists

2. Preferred DNS pointed to Local DC on all users machines.

3. Sites and services have the correct Domain Controller in AD Sites & Services.

4.No Time Sync issues noticed.

Previous it was pointing to Local DC, now it's pointing to Azure DC.

Kindly let me know what needs to be checked.

We have scheduled multiple scripts to run continuously for daily upto 15hrs in Windows Server 2016. Need a clean way to distinctly identify between RDP and TS sessions

We are using Win32 APIs ProcessIdToSessionId and GetSystemMetrics (SM_REMOTESESSION) to identify whether the session is remote or local.

But we currently don’t have a clean way to identify in remote sessions whether they are created from TS clients or for RDP connection to a local station.

Could you provide some technique prompt?

Thanks a lot!

GUI missing from Server 2012 R2 DataCenter Full Edition after uninstalling .Net Framework

Hi All,

We have windows server 2012 R2 DataCenter Edition Full version not Server Core.

We have uninstalled .Net framework from the server and there were some updates pending which also required a reboot. After uninstalling .Net Framework we rebooted the server, Once server was rebooted it's missing Windows GUI and only loads up a command prompt like Server Core edition.

We have done some research and found that if we uninstall .Net Framework we loose GUI and to get it back we have to install .Net Framework and powershell again from command prompt, which we have already done using the following commands.

DISM.exe /online /enable-feature /all featurename:NetFx4
DISM.exe /online /enable-feature /all featurename:MicrosoftWindowsPowerShell

After this we rebooted the server and installed Server-GUI-Shell & Server-GUI-mgmt-Infra from power shell using the following commands with Admin access.

Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Shell, Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra

We also tried from DISM method using:

Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:Server-Gui-Mgmt /featurename:Server-Gui-Shell /featurename:ServerCore-FullServer /all

After reboot when windows is loading after 35% it says We couldn't complete the features undoing changes message:

Please advise what we can do bring GUI back to this server.

Thanks

Hello,

I'm unable to install the latest cumulative update for Windows 2012 Server.

After reboot Windows rolls it back.

I've tried four times already. Wiping c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download doesn't help.

I need to understand what's wrong with my PC. I've been successfully using this server installation for three years and it's the first time an update fails.

Is this because this update is borked ( https://www.computerworld.com/article/3290948/microsoft-windows/microsoft-dives-down-a-bizarre-non-cumulative-rabbit-hole-with-july-patches.html )?

Can server 2016 KMS activate 2003 Severs

Hi,

Before anybody tells me how out of date my datacenter is, I know, I'm new to the position and frantically working to upgrade servers.

That being said, I have a large number of 2003-2008 servers still in production.

I have built out my new KMS server as I will be deploying 2016 servers going forward and replacing the old with 2016/2019.

My question is stated in the title.  If I remove the old 2008 KMS server, will the 2003 servers still be able to activate themselves?

Yet another DNS server access denied issue

Hello,

We have only one AD DC, and since the last hung of the virtual server (the host ran out of disk space on its snapshot, so I deleted the snapshot to get everything going again), the DNS refuses to connect to AD (event 4000 and 4007), and when the interface is started it says Access Denied.

I tried many tricks found by googling, none worked, including the netdom resetpwd (it returns Internal Error Occurred).  Any other netdom command workds perfectly, I tried adding a computer and no errors.  SFC /snannow reports no issue, the server has nothing installed beside being a DC.  GCPOFix did not fix it.  Checked ntds.dit and no errors.

Any other way to get this resolved?  If it it really the machine password, anyway to reset it manually with ADSIEdit?

Thanks, Dominic

Hello,

I have found that on the SCCM console some servers are showing Client Type: None, which impacts reporting.

There is no firewall enabled on any of these servers.

Hi, if I configure my server to get time from the NTP pool using this command:

w32tm /config /syncfromflags:manual /manualpeerlist:"0.pool.ntp.org 1.pool.ntp.org 2.pool.ntp.org 3.pool.ntp.org"

...will the server re-query DNS to get a new IP from the NTP pool if one of the current servers stops responding?

Thanks

Windows Server 2012 R2 VPN not authenticating for computer not joined to domain

$

Hi everyone,

I used to be able to VPN to our Windows Server 2012 R2 from any Windows 10 machine (not joined to domain), simply by creating a new VPN connection and enabling Ms-CHAP v2. When prompted during the VPN connection, I would enter domain user credentials for which VPN access is enabled.

Now all of a sudden this no longer works. When connecting, I am still prompted for login credentials, however credentials never actually authenticate. I know because I tested entering bogus credentials and I never actually get an error. After enter any credential (valid or not), the connection stalls with the message "Connecting to {xyz}".

I have been troubleshooting and everything looks perfect, so I am at a loss:

-VPN connection works perfectly for computer joined to domain
-Checked port 443 is open by navigating RWA
-Checked certificate binding
-No error in event viewer
-Checked VPN IP pool, tried connecting with specific ip/gateway/dns

I would be very appreciative if someone could point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/kb4516065-installation-fails-with-error-80092004/ef9994ee-7820-436e-b18f-001ae53edf28

Since it is a server I don't want to risk to download a patch from Internet. Is that waiting from Microsoft is all I could get? The attachment capture is the error message from my server (it is traditional Chinese).

Thanks for comments and advices.

Best Regards,

Jay

Cannot update Windows 7 - Systeminfo show no hotfixes

Hello,

I have been trying to install/update Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. But I cannot update.

The last error code from Windows Update is 800F0818.  It has been updating Defender Antivirus no problems, but almost nothing else.

Then I tried to run SYSTEMINFO.EXE to get list of hotfixes but it does not show any and it showed "N/A" only.

I have tried to run System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) but it did not help. SFC.EXE did not any errors.

Please help me what to do.  Thank you.

Hi, Guys.

Are critical security updates for CVE-2019-1367 considered an out-of-band updates and should be deployed to all applicable systems as an emergency or should be applied as part of normal patching cycle?

Thank you.
