Which Microsoft server operating systems can be repaired using an in place upgrade repair?

$

Microsoft has many operating systems for servers and non-servers.

At times the operating system can become corrupt.

Scannow and restorehealth commands may fail.

The next step is typically an in place upgrade repair.

This link has the repair method for Windows 10:

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html

So this is not an upgrade but an in place upgrade repair.

Please list all of the Microsoft operating systems (server and non-servers) and which ones can and cannot be repaired using the in place upgrade repair method.  In many cases a Windows iso is used for the repair.  Again this is not an upgrade but an in place upgrade repair.

Can't RDP to one of our server. Win 2008 R2 standard.

During attempt to connect by RDP, event log records this :

Schannel Event ID 36888 - The following fatal alert was generated: 10. The internal error state is 1203.

I've search the net and found some workarounds but nothing solved the issue. I also followed this KB article for checking but no luck.

Dear,

What is wrong in Win 2008 server below? The server was not shut down accidentally but why did I get the following message, in Win 2008 server?

Many Thanks & Best Regards, Hua Min

Error code: 0x80070035

$

I try to connect laptop and PC via private home network. At first they did not see any other computers in the network at all. For both computers, network adapter options have been changed and advanced sharing options have been set correctly. After that, the service function discovery resource publication service was started on both computers, then both computers became visible in the network. I can now get from laptop in PC but not the other way around, then I get error code 0x80070035, the external device or external source does not accept the connection. Strange is that I get the same error code when I try to access the laptop in network from the laptop itself, then also get error code 0x80070035, but with the addition, the network path can not find.

Meanwhile, all these steps have also been taken:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10741/windows-fix-network-connection-issues

I also tryd:

1. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.

2. Right click on the connection that you use for the local connection, and then click "Properties".

3. Click Continue button to verify the administrator permission.

4. Click to select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", and then click "Properties".

5. Click "Advanced" button in the open window. On the "WINS" tab, click to select "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP", and then click "OK" to save the setting.

I tryd to get into secpol.msc to enable  Send LM & NTLM- use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated but secpol is not available on my pc.

I tryd it with both F-secure and windows firewall disabled.

It still does not work.

I have no idea what to try next.

File Associations in 2012 R2 RDS Server using Roaming Profiles

$

Background Information

We recently moved from using 2008 R2 RDS servers to 2012 R2 RDS Servers. All of our users
have roaming profiles. When we migrated from the old terminal servers to the
new terminal servers, the users got completely new profiles. The only thing
moved from their old profiles were documents and items on their desktops. We
have multiple PDF viewers/editors installed on our RDS servers. Mostly due to
the cost difference between Adobe Acrobat and other, cheaper products that a
lot of our users can get away with using that don't need the functionality of
Adobe Acrobat.

The Problem

Ever since moving to the new 2012 R2 RDS servers, whenever our users log off terminal
server, the next time they log in their default PDF Viewer association doesn't
load, and they have to go through the process of choosing a default PDF viewer.
This only occurs when there's more than one PDF viewer installed on the server.
We've tested it with only one PDF viewer program, and the setting remains after
logging off and back on. The problem we've found is that the registry key that
houses the default user choice:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pdf\UserChoice
when set during the session, to Adobe Acrobat 11 for example, reads as such
inside that registry key. For example, the Progid key will say
Acrobat.Document.11 and this setting will persist until the user logs off. Upon
logging off and back on to the terminal servers, if you look at that same
Progid key, it has been converted in to a Hash value, and the Operating System
is unable to read the hashed value and determine what that user's default PDF
Viewer choice is, causing them to have to go through the process of setting it
again.

Things we've tried

We created a GPO that runs a script that exports the registry key upon log off that has
the non-hashed value, and have it set to import that value on log on. However,
by default this registry key has the DENY WRITE permission applied to it, so
when the system tries to import the registry key through the login script it is
unable to do so.

Summary

This issue only started happening once we moved over to 2012 R2 RDS servers. It only
occurs for users using Roaming Profiles. It only occurs when we have multiple
PDF Viewers installed on the servers. Any insight on why this is happening or
how to resolve it would be greatly appreciated.

error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR Windows 10 Ver 1803

$

What I have is a Client  Windows 10 Pro  Ver 1803  all patched with a Windows server 2012 R2 domain controller

when trying to join the domain I get the error (I have changed some of the text for security reasons)

The domain name "XXXXXX" might be a NetBIOS domain name.  If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.

If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for domain "XXXXXX":

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.XXXXXX

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS.
These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain.
They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:

192.168.XXX.XXX
192.168.XXX.XXX
192.168.XXX.XXX

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

XXXXXX
. (the root zone)

Like I said above this is a windows 10 Pro client updated to the 1803 version.

I can ping the DNS server. I can do a nslookup on the DNS server and both work fine. I can ping and nslookup on other servers and they work fine

I can type in the path to a folder on a server in the search box on the task bar and it opens the folder.

I have put the DNS server IP directly into the network properties on the client and it did not help.

I disabled the IPV6 and this did not help.

This is the 3rd client this has happened to me.  So far the only thing I have been able to do is RE-Install windows 10 and at the 1703 version join the domain (Which it does with no problems) and then update the system to the 1803 Version.

Does anybody have an Idea what is wrong with the 1803 Version that it will not join a domain.

Thanks

Joel

Cloning Software for Windows Server

Hello,

We still have some Windows server 2003 running due to our legacy applications still being used. I want to clone these servers so that I have a backup in case something happens to it.

Do you guys have any recommendations which cloning software that still supports Windows 2003 server that is reliable?

Thanks,

Cannot get rid of 169.xx.xx.xx IP address on new Server

$

I did a fresh install of Windows Server 2016 on VM Esxi Virtual machine. The server acquired some weird IP address starting with 169.xx , I ignored and gave it a static IP in the local network(all other systems working fine with these range of IPs).

Now this new server does not accept this IP (shows it as duplicate) and that 169.xx IP is taken as preferred. I tried all possible way to get rid of that default IP and assign it a static LAN IP.

Please suggest.

Kerberos errors eventid 11 and 3 - but the duplicate SPNs are being recreated on 2012 r2 domain controller

So I have these 2 dcs - dc1 and dc2. And I'm getting events 3 and 11. So it's a duplicate SPNs issue. OK. No big deal.

        CN=DC1,OU=Domain Controllers,DC=foo,DC=local

found 5 groups of duplicate SPNs.

I delete all dc1 SPNs from dc2 wihout any problems. 0 duplicate SPNs. It's all good.

Except it's just for a while, because the SPNs are recreated after a couple of minutes.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Event Log Forwarding (PUSH) not working - collector HTTP URL not available

$

Given the requirements vary with Collector initiated vs. Push collection of events, note that I'm only using the Push method.

I have a Win10 Collector and two clients, Win10 & Win7.  All of the machines are in the same domain.

Since I'm using Push, I did not perform any special configuration on the clients.  I did everything via GP.

1. Configured the subscription manager.  Server=http://mycollector.fabrikam.com:5985/wsman/SubscriptionManager/WEC,Refresh=60

2. Allowed remote server management though WinRM.  ALL IP's

3. Enable WinRM to automatically start - which it does on all machines.

I get this on both Clients:

The forwarder is having a problem communicating with subscription manager at address http://mycollector.fabrikam.com:5985/wsman/SubscriptionManager/WEC.  Error code is 2150859027 and Error Message is <f:WSManFault xmlns:f="http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wsmanfault" Code="2150859027" Machine="Win7Ex64.fabrikam.com"><f:Message>The WinRM client sent a request to an HTTP server and got a response saying the requested HTTP URL was not available. This is usually returned by a HTTP server that does not support the WS-Management protocol. </f:Message></f:WSManFault>.

This message appears roughly every 60 seconds in the Win7 log but very seldom in the WIn10 log.

So the clients obviously see the subscription and try to contact the Collector but fail.

I can ping the server by name and the firewall rule for port 5985 is enabled.

Lastly, I set up an additional Collector on a Server 2012 R2 machine and added it to the subscription GP.  Both machines reported the same error connecting to it.

Not sure what else to try.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Getting below error while installing the patch manually.

Windows update  could not be installed because of error2149842967"" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Users\adm\Desktop\windows6.1-kb4103718-x64_c051268978faef39e21863a95ea2452ecbc0936d.msu"       ")

When testing DTC using DTCPing all the tests are reported as sucessfull but it also reports that the CID values are duplicates and that DCT will fail. I've tried fallowing various suggestions found online, and gone as far as removing DTC from cluster, uninstall DTC and then reinstalling and adding back to the cluster.

I also get clutil.cpp @256 Access Denied errors.

Thank you for any help.
