Remove Drive letter requires reboot

I am trying to convert a backup drive letter (X:) to a mount point drive.  I need to remove the current letter from the drive and assign to the lun that will host the mount points.  The OS is requiring a reboot to complete this operation.  I just did this process on a similar server and it did not require a reboot?  This is a critical production DB server so Is there any way I can get around having to reboot the machine?

Thanks!
