Windows 2008r2 VHD : A disk read error occurred (Running under windows 8 hyper -v)

I think this primarily a Windows 2008r2 issue rather than a hyper-v issue..

1. have a bootable win2008r2 bootable vhd .which works fine on my old win7 laptop
2. coped the vhd to my new windows 8 laptop and created a new virtual machine with it ( not a vhdx)
3. Then my troubles started....
4. First error:  Boot failure. Reboot and select a proper boot device
5. Booted from cd and ran repair .
6. when this did not work ran 

bcdedit /set {default} device partition=c:

.....

all 3 commands were sucnessful

reran repair and got the disk read error....

Really odd as now repair thinks everything is fine  but

bootrec /rebuildbcd

Total identified windows installations = 0

Any ideas
